House On The Hill - John Miles
Why have I chosen an obscure B-side that wasn’t on an album, of an obscure song that didn’t even reach the Top 20, and was released 50 years ago? Because I like it! If your singer can reach those high notes, I’m sure this could be rocked up and would make a great addition to any band’s setlist.
Most of you will probably know John from his 1976 hit Music, which did quite well at the time and went on to become a classic, often featuring in various “best of…” lists. He later became Tina Turner’s touring guitarist and was a regular feature at European Proms festivals and concerts.
Look it up on YouTube, or, preferably, track down the Stranger in the City CD, where it’s been included as one of the bonus tracks. If you like it, the bobsbasslines.com website has transcriptions of his first five albums for you to play along with.
There’s nothing particularly taxing about the bassline—just remember to lock in with the drummer and you should be absolutely fine. There's a really nice diminished run to play, along with a delicious flat fifth in the main riff.
Have a listen, grab your bass, and rock out to this great song!
Simply follow the score at the bottom of the screen and play along. The top half of the screen shows you where to place your fingers and which string to play. Alternatively, you can download a PDF of the music from:
