I’m currently in the lab on a Saturday afternoon trying to catch up on some recoveries after a week full of difficult cases. Today, I'm working on a 3-terabyte hard disk drive from an iMac, sent in by a customer from Somerville, Massachusetts. The drive arrived with a mechanical issue where the reading heads were damaged due to scratches on the disk surface, causing the drive to click and fail. Initially, we diagnosed the drive thinking the metadata might be stored on the damaged surface, but that wasn't the case. After the customer approved the service, we began the cloning process and discovered that this drive was part of a Fusion Drive—a hard disk paired with an internal solid-state drive (SSD). We contacted the customer to retrieve the SSD so we could work on the two units together. This turned out to be a partial recovery; because of the severe surface damage on disk two, we were able to successfully clone about 83% of the drive. While some files with missing data from that damaged section won't be recoverable, the customer was able to get back a large portion of their pictures, documents, and other important data.
