Almost every edge of Wisconsin was argued over, surveyed wrong, traded away or fought out in front of the Supreme Court. The border towns are where the proof still sits. This is a countdown of thirteen of them, working our way around the state, and at every stop we look across the line first, at Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois or Michigan, because the other side usually explains the secret. There's a fifty-five-ton boulder that never left the bedroom it crashed into, a riverbank holding a shut-down reactor's spent fuel next to a village of about 230 people, a four-story hotel built for a capital that went to Madison, a waterfall that's been underwater since 1907, and one fish that two states both list as their record. Along the way: Fountain City, Genoa, Potosi and its brewery, Hazel Green, Alma and Frederick Weyerhaeuser's log empire, Cassville and Nelson Dewey's Stonefield, La Crosse, Saint Croix Falls, Washington Island's Icelanders, Land O' Lakes and the Gateway Lodge, Prairie du Chien's Fort Crawford with Zachary Taylor and Jefferson Davis, and Superior, home of the last whaleback and a summer of Calvin Coolidge. The last stop I'm keeping for the end. Grew up in a Wisconsin border town? Tell me which one, and what was waiting across the line.
