Mastodon After Brent Hinds

Mastodon was co-founded on a broken-down couch in a basement show back in 2000, and twenty-five years later they're releasing Marrow Deep, their first album without Brent Hinds, the guy who helped build the band from the ground up. What happened between Brent and the rest of Mastodon, why the split actually went down, and what it's been like for Brann, Bill, and Troy to keep making music in the wake of losing him? That's what this video digs into. We go back to the beginning, through the head injury that basically wrote Crack the Skye for them, through the years of tension nobody really talked about publicly, all the way up to the letter that ended it, all the way through the show in Alaska where they had to stand on stage two days after his death and figure out how to keep playing his songs What's most interesting is watching a band that's spent twenty-five years being defined by four very different, very unique personalities figure out how to move forward as five people instead, still carrying him with them, whether they wanted to or not.
