Modified CFMoto 450MT vs KTM 390 Adventure R - Which Works Better Off-Road?

The CFMoto 450MT goes head-to-head with the KTM 390 Adventure R in a proper off-road comparison — but with one important twist: the CFMoto has received a serious suspension upgrade. With an Öhlins rear shock and a fork conversion by Martin Bauer, around €2,000 has been invested into the CFMoto’s suspension. But does that transform it into the better off-road bike, or is the lighter and more focused KTM 390 Adventure R still the stronger choice when the terrain gets difficult? Clemens and Supermoto world champion Bernd Hiemer test both bikes on gravel roads, technical forest sections and the adventure trails at Red Stag. The CFMoto impresses with its smooth twin-cylinder engine, stronger low-down torque, comfortable ergonomics, good wind protection and extensive electronics. Android Auto, navigation, connectivity and plenty of touring features make it a very complete package for longer trips. The KTM takes a different approach. Its single-cylinder engine needs more revs, the riding position is more active and the overall package is more focused on demanding off-road riding. Its lower weight becomes especially noticeable in slow, technical terrain, while the ABS calibration also works better when things get serious. We also compare ergonomics, throttle response, suspension, ABS, traction control, weight, touring comfort and the differences between a single-cylinder and twin-cylinder adventure bike. And the big question: Is the expensive CFMoto suspension upgrade actually worth it? In the end, both bikes have very different strengths.
