Hollywood used to make movies with teeth. Paul Verhoeven's 1987 RoboCop is the perfect example. It's an ultra-violent 1980s action movie, a vicious corporate satire, a science-fiction thriller, a dark comedy and a surprisingly emotional story about a man fighting to reclaim his humanity. And somehow, it all works. In this Cinema With Teeth retrospective, we break down why RoboCop remains one of the greatest science-fiction action movies ever made. We look at the insane world of Omni Consumer Products, the movie's brutal take on corporate greed and privatized police, the genius of its fake commercials, the incredible practical effects, the legendary RoboCop suit and Paul Verhoeven's ability to turn outrageous violence into social commentary. We also look at Peter Weller's performance as Alex Murphy/RoboCop and why his physical acting is so damn effective. Weller had to communicate the humanity of a murdered police officer while spending most of the movie buried inside a mechanical suit. That's the real secret of RoboCop. Underneath the blood, bullets, explosions and dark comedy is a Frankenstein story about identity. Alex Murphy dies. OCP rebuilds him. The corporation thinks it created a machine. Instead, it accidentally created a pissed-off cop who remembers who he was. And that is where RoboCop becomes more than another 1980s action movie. It's a movie about corporate America turning everything into a product. It's a movie about television turning violence into entertainment. It's a movie about technology stripping away human identity. And it's a movie about one dead Detroit cop taking his identity back one criminal at a time. This is why RoboCop still kicks Hollywood's ass nearly forty years later. Dead or alive, you're coming with me.
