In 1954, Dorothy Dandridge became the first Black woman on the cover of Life magazine. Eleven years later, she was gone. What happened in between?
In this documentary, we trace her story from the child performer of the Wonder Children and the Dandridge Sisters to her breakthrough in Carmen Jones, which made her the first Black woman nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. We look at the segregation she faced even at the height of her fame, the limited roles offered after her nomination, her financial struggles, and the personal pressures she carried, including the care of her daughter, Harolyn.
We also cover her death in 1965 and the official finding of an overdose. Whether it was accidental or intentional has been debated, so we present what is documented separately from what is claimed.
Finally, we explore how her legacy was reclaimed, from her Walk of Fame star to Halle Berry’s tribute decades later.
Why does her story still matter today?
