Why Do These Men Flog Themselves? Inside Nigeria’s Agemo Festival

INSIDE THE AGEMO FESTIVAL: THE MYSTERIOUS YORUBA TRADITION OF SAGAMU, NIGERIA What happens when history, spirituality, culture, and tradition come together in one ceremony? I travelled to Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria, to witness the Agemo Festival, a traditional festival deeply connected to Yoruba cultural and spiritual heritage. What I experienced was more than a celebration. It was an opportunity to witness a living tradition, meet the people responsible for preserving it, and learn more about the customs that have been passed down through generations. In this documentary, I take you inside the Agemo Festival, capturing the ceremony, the Agemo masquerade, the atmosphere of the gathering, and the remarkable ritual in which men strike themselves with long canes. I also had the opportunity to interview the Chief Priest and Chief Priestess, who share their perspectives on the tradition, its significance, and the people who keep it alive. From the sounds of the drums to the powerful moments of the ceremony, this documentary offers an up-close look at a cultural experience that deserves to be documented and understood.
