Thousands of years ago, in the harsh landscape of Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch, an extraordinary city rose on Khadir Island. This was Dholavira — one of the most remarkable urban settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization. In a place where water was scarce and the climate was challenging, the people of Dholavira developed an impressive system of reservoirs, channels, drainage structures and urban planning to manage seasonal water. But then, something changed. The city gradually transformed, its population declined, and eventually much of Dholavira was abandoned. Was drought responsible? Did changing climate and water availability play a role? Or was the story more complicated? In this episode of Mitti Mein Raaz, we travel through Dholavira’s rise, its extraordinary water-management system, its trade and urban life, its later transformation, and the archaeological discoveries that brought its story back to light.
