you can buy a complete distilling kit for around $100—or spend $3,000 or more on a high-end setup. But does spending more actually make better spirits? In this video, we look beyond price and compare what really matters in still design: lid sealing, vapor path, column design, passive reflux, thumpers, condenser capacity, boiler construction, copper contact, power control, modularity, and more. We’ll also look at some of the compromises found in ultra-inexpensive stills, as well as why spending thousands of dollars on polished copper doesn’t automatically mean you’ll make better whiskey. The bottom line is simple: a better still gives you better tools. It doesn’t give you better judgment. A beginner doesn’t need an expensive still. A beginner needs a well-designed still—and then needs to learn how to use it.
