The Lore Of Lapis Lazuli Is DEVASTATING

This video explains the complete lore of Lapis Lazuli from Steven Universe, from her imprisonment inside a hand mirror to her fusion with Jasper as Malachite and her life on Earth. The video tells Lapis Lazuli's story in order, starting with the cracked teardrop gem Pearl brings home from the Galaxy Warp in "Mirror Gem." It explains how Homeworld forces sealed her in the mirror after mistaking her for a Crystal Gem rebel, and how Rebecca Sugar later confirmed that Bismuth was the Gem who poofed her. It then looks at her escape in "Ocean Gem," her fusion with Jasper, and how her long captivity shapes her later choices. The final parts follow her time in the barn with Peridot and her fear of another war. What's covered in this video: • The mirror's design, including the eight pointed star etched into its glass and the cracked teardrop gem on its silver blue back, is treated as the first clue to who Lapis is. • In "Mirror Gem," the mirror splices borrowed words from Mayor Dewey, Steven, and Garnet into the plea "Let me out." • Steven pulls the gem from the mirror, and in "Ocean Gem" he heals her crack, which gives her blank, reflective eyes dark blue irises. • Lapis pulls the ocean of Beach City into a towering column of water to reach Homeworld and tells Steven, "I just want to go home." • Fan sources such as the Steven Universe Wiki put her age at about six thousand years, with most of that time spent inside the mirror. • Her accusation, "You three knew I was in there," casts suspicion on Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, and Rose Quartz. • In "Same Old World," Lapis projects a memory showing she was a civilian poofed during the Rebellion and then imprisoned by Homeworld soldiers who thought she was a rebel. • At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Rebecca Sugar confirmed that Bismuth poofed Lapis and that neither Gem ever recognized the other. • In "Jail Break," Jasper persuades Lapis to fuse into Malachite, and Lapis uses her water powers to chain the fusion at the bottom of the ocean. • On the Steven Universe Podcast, Rebecca Sugar describes Lapis as a character who is taken advantage of constantly and who is always grappling for control. • The search for Malachite in "Full Disclosure" and "Chille Tid" leads to Lapis refusing to fuse with Jasper again in "Alone at Sea." • Jennifer Paz, who voices Lapis, originally auditioned for Amethyst, a role that went to Michaela Dietz, and Kimberly Brooks voices Jasper. • The later sections cover Lapis sharing a barn with Peridot, her silence after "Ocean Gem," and the barn lifted toward the Moon out of fear of war with Homeworld.
