Gravedigger Explains Lee Harvey Oswald’s Exhumation & The Casket That Went to Court
Before five in the morning on October 4, 1981, a backhoe was idling in the dark at Rose Hill Burial Park in Fort Worth, Texas. News helicopters were already circling. No cameras were allowed on the grounds. Marina Oswald Porter waited in a car in the parking lot. At five o’clock, the machine went to work. By half past six, they had Oswald’s casket on the surface — and what was in it, after eighteen years in North Texas clay, was not what most people picture when they hear the word casket. This video covers the British lawyer who spent years and thousands of his own dollars forcing that grave open, what the ground did to everything inside a five-hundred-and-seventy-three-dollar pine box in eighteen years of wet clay, what the forensic examination found and what one piece of it left unsettled, and what happened to that original casket after the reburial — because it did not get destroyed. It went into storage. Then it went to auction in 2010 for $87,468. Then it went to court. And the man who paid $300 for that box in 1963 to put his brother in the ground spent four years in a lawsuit to have it destroyed. The grave is still there. One word on the headstone. And next to it, a headstone that says NICK BEEF.
