“Ching-A-Ling’s Jazz Bazaar” is a lively fox-trot from the early jazz/dance-band era, composed by Ethel Bridges with lyrics by Howard E. Johnson. The Plantation Jazz Orchestra recording is an energetic instrumental treatment typical of 1920 dance music; discographical research identifies the group as probably Harry Raderman’s Orchestra. The piece itself reflects the period’s fascination with “exotic” themes and uses stereotypes of Chinese-American culture that are recognized as dated and offensive today.
