Why can't so many Africans in the UK just pack up and go home(Japada)? They want to leave the UK & go Home but they are stuck! They've been asking themselves that question every single month. But the UK trap is real — and it is silently killing all our plans to leave and go back to Africa.
You see the videos of people relocating back home, celebrating their japa to Nigeria and Ghana, and you wonder: if they can do it, why can't I? The answer is the ‘life in the UK’ trap — a web of financial struggle, UK immigration problems, ILR & Citizenship struggle, the cost of living crisis, stress and burnout that has trapped thousands of Africans in the diaspora. We want to relocate back to Africa, tap into the investment opportunities back home in Ghana and Nigeria, and start over. But every time we try, something pulls us back.
In this video, I break down the 5 shocking traps that are keeping thousands of Africans stuck in the UK, even when every part of them wants to leave.
⚫ TRAP 1 — The Failed Japa or repatriation stories. Africans who went home with £50,000 and lost the entire investment. We've all heard one. It makes Africans in the UK terrified of leaving.
⚫ TRAP 2 — Settled families. Many Africans are permanently settled in the UK now. They have children born here, partners, responsibilities we cannot simply abandon. Going home isn't a decision — it's a whole family decision.
⚫ TRAP 3 — Health. The UK NHS provides healthcare many of us believe is better than back home. So even when life is hard here, we stay for the medical safety net.
⚫ TRAP 4 — Loss of your social support system. In Ghana & Nigeria. Being away for decades makes navigating the African landscape as a diaspora returnee genuinely difficult. Who do you call? Where do you start?
⚫ TRAP 5 — Security. Many diasporans still believe Africa is not safe and that the UK is the only secure place to live permanently. That belief keeps us trapped.
This is the reality nobody talks about. If you are a Nigerian, a Ghanaian, or an African in the UK who wants to leave but feels stuck, this video is for you. Understanding the trap is the first step to planning your way out.
Drop a comment below. Where are you watching from — the UK, Canada, America, Ghana or Nigeria? Let's debate in the comments. We are forming a community of Africans in the diaspora who refuse to be trapped.
