CA125 ovarian cancer screening is a valuable tool, but it’s not perfect. It’s just one piece of the puzzle that experts use to understand what’s going on. In this video, Dr. Lauren Cobb, Executive Director of Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, explains how CA125 screening plays a crucial role in diagnosis, monitoring treatment, and detecting recurrence. The effectiveness of CA125 in detecting ovarian cancer varies significantly by disease stage. In early-stage ovarian cancer, CA125 levels are elevated in only about 50% of cases. In advanced-stage ovarian cancer, CA125 levels are elevated in approximately 92% of cases. CA125 is present in many types of ovarian cancer, but it’s also elevated in conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, and even during menstruation. This means that while CA125 can detect ovarian cancer, it’s not always reliable on its own. It’s an essential piece of the puzzle, but not the whole picture when it comes to ovarian cancer diagnosis.
