The island was once home to a small community and was used for farming, including coconut plantations. It was also associated with holiday and recreational activities, and at one time plans were made to develop the island into a leisure destination. Over the years, much of its original rustic character remained. Coney Island Park officially opened to the public on 10 October 2015, inaugurated by Transport Minister and Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure, Khaw Boon Wan. In its early days, the park became known for sightings of a free-ranging Brahman cow that roamed the area.
