What if Ned Stark never rode south to King's Landing, and Jon Snow never took the black at the Wall? Under the snow on Winterfell's roofs, the granite walls have been cold for forty years. Far below the cellar flags, a thread of hot water still runs. Lord Stark chooses his family over the court in the south. With an iron torch in hand, he leads Jon into the dark beneath the First Keep to reopen the old hot springs.
Instead of riding for the Iron Throne, Ned turns his labor toward home. Can Robb and Jon, working with the castle masons, unearth the old vellum charts and turn the iron wheel locked in the deep vaults? Above them, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Catelyn press their hands against the walls. Under their touch, the granite finally warms as winter closes in.
Steam rises through the flues, and frost melts from the high walls. By waking the deep waters that built Winterfell, House Stark protects its own. Winter may come for the rest of Westeros, but inside these gates, the stones stay warm.
