This old R-22 Lennox air conditioner was running but not cooling the house properly, and I found several problems working together. I started in the attic and found water in the auxiliary drain pan, along with a completely plugged air filter on a zoned HVAC system. Outside, I found a failed condenser fan capacitor and a condenser coil that was completely packed with dirt. After replacing the capacitor, cleaning the condenser coil, and correcting the airflow issues, the system was operating again. However, I was still only measuring a 13°F temperature difference between the return and supply air. Based on the return-air dry-bulb and wet-bulb measurements, the low temperature split appeared to be caused by the extremely high indoor sensible and latent heat load, not necessarily a refrigerant problem. This is a real, unedited HVAC service call showing why technicians must evaluate the entire system before assuming an old R-22 unit is simply low on refrigerant.
