James Moore put the Roof of Africa crowd on their feet today, taking the Gold class Time Trial in 25:01.91 to lead the cumulative standings heading into Friday's Big Loop. The South African rider beat championship leader Manuel Lettenbichler by just 15 seconds, with Ashton Brightmore a further 0.70 seconds back in third — the top three separated by less than 17 seconds after Day 1. The biggest subplot of the day came from Mitch Brightmore, who set the fastest lap of any Gold rider — 24:11.99, nearly 50 seconds quicker than Moore's winning time — only to receive a 5-minute penalty that dropped him to 9th. Teo Kabakchiev sits fourth overall, 69 seconds back, with home favourite Wade Young fifth. Day 2 tomorrow: the Big Loop. Approximately 110km into the Maloti Mountains. Gold class starts at 07:00.
