A door blew off a Boeing jet at sixteen thousand feet over Portland, and investigators found four bolts that were never installed in the first place.
This video traces how Boeing got there: the 1997 McDonnell Douglas merger that put Harry Stonecipher's finance-first culture in charge, the 2001 move of headquarters to Chicago away from the factory floor, more than forty billion dollars spent on stock buybacks while the 737 MAX was rushed into production, and the MCAS software built to patch an airframe problem instead of redesigning it. It follows chief technical pilot Mark Forkner's internal messages, the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes that killed 346 people, Dennis Muilenburg's congressional testimony and firing, the Justice Department's criminal settlement, whistleblower John Barnett's death during deposition testimony, the stranded Starliner astronauts, the 2024 machinists' strike, and Boeing's decision to buy back Spirit AeroSystems.
The question running through all of it: how does a company that once defined an entire industry end up unable to build its own airplane safely, and who, at every step, chose profit over the plane.
