Maasin is the coastal capital city of Southern Leyte, Philippines, known as the “City of Faith” for its rich religious heritage and vibrant community life.
Maasin’s early history included Spanish colonial settlement, with Jesuit missionaries establishing the first parish in the 1700s.
The town grew as a seaport and religious center, later governed by Augustinian and Franciscan missionaries.
Maasin became a municipality and later the capital of the newly formed Southern Leyte Province in 1960.
It achieved cityhood on August 10, 2000. The city is historically notable as the birthplace of Rodrigo Duterte, the 16th President of the Philippines
