The Old City of Jerusalem
The Old City of Jerusalem lies within historic city walls and covers an area of approximately one square kilometre. It is traditionally divided into four quarters: the Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Armenian Quarters.
The present city walls were built in the 16th century under the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. They are approximately four kilometres long and contain eight gates, seven of which are open.
Jerusalem has a history spanning more than 3,000 years. Beneath today’s streets and buildings lie numerous archaeological layers from different periods, including the eras of the First and Second Temples, the Roman and Byzantine periods, and the Crusader and Ottoman eras.
Among the most significant sites in the Old City are the Temple Mount, with the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa. These places hold special religious significance for Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
In 1948, during the Arab-Israeli War, Jerusalem was divided. The Old City came under Jordanian control. During this period, Jews were denied access to the Western Wall and other Jewish holy sites in the Old City. In June 1967, Israel captured the Old City during the Six-Day War. Since then, it has remained under Israeli control, while its international legal status remains disputed.
In 1981, the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
