Russell T Davies Says Doctor Who Didn't Work on Disney+ — But Why?

Russell T Davies has acknowledged that Doctor Who simply didn't work on Disney+. But was the problem the programme itself, the streaming platform, or the way Doctor Who was released? In this edition of Kasterborous, Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss RTD's comments in his memoir The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television and what they reveal about Doctor Who's international ambitions. Davies suggests that Doctor Who was never going to compete with the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek in America. He also questions whether the series suited the bigger-budget approach and acknowledges the complications of launching with the 60th anniversary specials, followed by a Christmas special and another gap before the new series. But James raises an interesting point: Davies isn't necessarily criticising the quality of Doctor Who. Instead, he may be suggesting that Disney+ was never the right distribution partner. We discuss whether the partnership made sense, how Doctor Who compares with streaming successes such as Stranger Things, and whether the series really needed to change to appeal to an international audience. What do you think? Was Disney+ the wrong home for Doctor Who, or were there deeper problems with the programme?
