They tried to mine this Arctic valley four times

At the end of a six-kilometre trail in Reisadalen, Northern Norway, there's a copper mine. Between 1900 and 1930, four different attempts were made to make it pay. None of them lasted. I walked up in late September, when the birch had turned and the first snow had settled on the summits. The valley has three names: Moskodalen in Norwegian, Moskkuvággi in North Sami, and Moskuvankka in Kven. The smelting furnaces from 1907, the year around a hundred men worked here, are still standing. The trail follows the old cart road from the mining era and crosses the river on a suspension bridge that is taken down every winter. The last stretch up to the mines is sometimes closed after rockslides. I live in Nordreisa, 69 degrees north. This channel is about what it actually looks like to live here.
