A controversy over the questioning of woman journalist Jalli Rekha at Hyderabad’s Central Crime Station has triggered a fresh debate over press freedom, police procedure and the treatment of journalists.
According to reports, Rekha was questioned for nearly seven hours in connection with a cybercrime case linked to social-media allegations concerning Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s family. BRS leaders and her associates alleged that police visited her residence around midnight to serve a notice and that she had to remain at the station with her six-month-old infant and three-year-old son. Police have not publicly provided a detailed response to all of these allegations.
The case is connected to an FIR against BRS social-media convenor Manne Krishank and a media outlet over alleged claims concerning properties and pharmaceutical companies allegedly linked to the Chief Minister’s daughter. The Telangana High Court directed police to issue Krishank a notice under Section 35(3) of the BNSS and to follow the Supreme Court’s guidelines in Arnesh Kumar v. State of Bihar.
In this video, we examine the sequence of events — the alleged midnight police visit, the questioning of journalist Rekha, the presence of her infant at the CCS, the viral social-media controversy and the larger debate over freedom of the press in Telangana.
Was the police action carried out according to proper procedure? What are the rights of journalists during an investigation? And does this episode raise legitimate concerns about press freedom?
