In 1928 the land - which was at the time owned by New Zealand Railways - was purchased by Dr. Frederick Bevan-Brown. Dr Maurice Bevan-Brown, Frederick’s Brother, inherited ownership in 1937. A conservationist before his time, ‘B.B’ set about managing the land with the following objectives: “To preserve an area of bush as close to its natural state as possible and to provide a sanctuary for the native birds, that all may enjoy”. The Reserve was gazetted as a Private Scenic Reserve in 1954, being one of the first privately owned reserves in New Zealand. It currently holds a Q.E.II Open Space Covenant. Harold Harris, a colleague and close friend of Maurice’s, worked alongside him. After Maurice’s death in 1968, Harold continued with the same objectives, developing them for a further 20 years. Kowai Bush Scenic Reserve is now owned and cared for by Harold’s family. Things you may see: Massive lifted root balls and corresponding craters in the ground Evidence of hillocks from the last event 400-800 years ago around the top stile & in other areas Stripping of the tree canopy, increased sunlight Rapid regeneration & change in the biodiversity of the native undergrowth Quiet New Zealand — Peaceful walks through New Zealand. #QuietNewZealand #QNZ #NewZealandCountryside #CountryWalk #NaturalSounds #RuralNewZealand #PeacefulWalk
