“The Thing I Never Saw” is a Dark Country / Appalachian Gothic story about a man trapped in a hunting cabin deep in the mountains while a violent storm closes in around him. Something begins moving outside the cabin. He can hear it circling the building, but every time he looks, there is nothing there. When his truck becomes stuck in the mud, his only way out is a six-mile walk down the mountain toward the nearest town. Whatever was outside follows him. When he walks, it walks. When he runs, it runs. And eventually it gets close enough for him to feel its breath against his neck. Sparse acoustic guitar, upright bass and restrained fiddle gradually build into a tighter, more urgent rhythm as the walk becomes a desperate run through the rain.
