Someone already built your idea. There’s already an app. A startup. A company. A product doing something similar. So… are you too late? I don’t think so. Building a product is only one part of building a business. Development matters, but so do product refinement, branding, marketing, sales, distribution, customer acquisition, scaling, operations, and continuous improvement. Two companies can build similar products and end up with completely different results. One might have better technology. The other might understand its customers better. One might build first. The other might have better distribution. One might have more features. The other might create a dramatically better experience. That’s why discovering competition shouldn't automatically make you quit. Instead, ask: What are they doing well? Where are customers frustrated? What do users complain about? Who are they serving? Who aren't they serving? How do they acquire customers? What could I do differently? Maybe the opportunity is a better product. Maybe it's a better customer experience. Maybe it's a different target market. Maybe it's better distribution. Maybe it's better positioning. And sometimes your research will tell you that the opportunity isn't worth pursuing. That's useful too. The important thing is to make that decision based on the entire business opportunity—not simply because someone else already built something similar. In this video, we break down the difference between building a product and building a business, and why being first to market doesn't automatically mean you'll win. That doesn't tell you how well they're running the entire race. Research the market. Understand the competition. Find your differentiation. Then decide. And if the opportunity makes sense: Build the Business, Not Just the Product. Question for you Have you ever abandoned an idea because you discovered someone had already built it? Or did you go ahead anyway?
