4000 KM SOLO DRIVE | EP-06: Pondicherry to Vijayawada | Chennai Detour #indicoverlander 4000 KM SOLO DRIVE | Return Journey – Pondicherry to Vijayawada The return journey had begun. After spending memorable days in the charming French town of Pondicherry, it was time to point my Mahindra Thar towards home. This was another chapter of my 4000 km solo drive from Kolkata to Pondicherry and back—a journey where every kilometer had a story waiting to unfold. The plan was simple. I intended to follow the scenic coastal route for as long as possible, enjoying the refreshing sea breeze and the changing landscapes of Tamil Nadu. But road trips rarely go exactly as planned. A roadblock ahead forced me to abandon the coastal road and take a diversion through the Old Mamallapuram Road towards Chennai. At first, it felt like an unexpected inconvenience. However, over the years I've learnt that some of the finest travel experiences begin with a change of plans. After crossing Chennai and joining the National Highway towards Vijayawada, the drive transformed into something truly special. The highway stretched endlessly ahead, smooth and inviting. On either side stood rows of blooming Tabebuia rosea trees, their soft pink blossoms turning the roadside into a natural avenue of colour. It felt as if nature had organised a farewell celebration for every traveller passing through. Adding another layer of beauty were the rocky hillocks that appeared from time to time along the horizon. The combination of flower-lined roads, rolling hills, open skies and excellent highways made this one of the most picturesque drives of my entire expedition. Travelling alone has its own rhythm. There is no rush, no fixed timetable and no distractions—just the road, the vehicle and your thoughts. Every stop becomes your own decision, every photograph your own memory and every unexpected turn another page in your travel diary. As the kilometers rolled by, I reflected on how unpredictable road journeys can be. The roadblock that had initially disrupted my plans had actually gifted me one of the most beautiful drives of this 4000 km adventure. It was a reminder that sometimes the best roads are the ones we never intended to take. By evening, I reached Vijayawada after another fulfilling day behind the wheel. The Mahindra Thar had once again carried me effortlessly across states, through changing landscapes and unexpected detours, proving why overlanding is less about reaching a destination and more about embracing the journey itself. The road home was still long, but with every passing kilometer, the memories of this incredible solo expedition were becoming richer. Sometimes, all you need is an open highway, a dependable vehicle and the courage to keep driving towards the next horizon. Until the next adventure, stay curious, travel responsibly, and keep exploring the roads less travelled.
