In an unmarked mill outside Cerignola, workers tint cheap sunflower oil green until it passes for extra virgin. Then it ships to Germany as one of the most expensive oils on the shelf. In 2019 the Carabinieri pulled about a hundred and fifty thousand litres of it out of a single operation. This video follows why olive oil is faked more than almost any food on earth, and lands on the strange part: the grades and origin seals Europe built to make olive oil trustworthy are exactly what make faking it pay. The word extra virgin is a measurable grade, the gap between it and cheap pomace oil is roughly tenfold, and that gap is the whole prize. From the Piromalli clan moving fake oil through the port of Gioia Tauro to the United States, to the tasting panels whose verdicts stand up in an Italian court, to a 2023 seizure of more than two hundred and sixty thousand litres, every safeguard raises the reward for beating it. Which leaves the question the next seizure will not answer. What is a guarantee actually protecting, once the guarantee itself becomes the thing most worth faking? Harvest Watch investigates the hidden crises behind the food and farming we take for granted, where the fix for one problem quietly creates another. Subscribe so you do not miss the next one.
