After a severe overnight snowstorm, an Afghan Hazara family living high in the remote mountains of Afghanistan wakes to discover that their only route to the village has disappeared beneath deep snow.
Cut off from the outside community, the family must carefully manage their remaining food, collect water from a frozen mountain stream, protect their livestock, keep their traditional mud home warm and remove dangerous snow accumulating on the roof.
The father attempts to find a safe route around the buried mountain pass while another winter storm approaches. Inside the home, the mother and their 19-year-old daughter prepare traditional food and ration their supplies as the family waits for conditions to improve.
Filmed in an immersive observational-documentary style with natural environmental sounds, Afghan Dari conversation and English subtitles, this story explores Afghan Hazara village life, traditional winter routines and survival in Afghanistan’s remote mountain highlands.
No music. No narration. Just the sounds and daily life of a family living at the edge of the frozen mountains.
