Hundreds of Beavers Is Gloriously Ridiculous | Movie Watch

“This is the most mixed medium film I’ve ever seen.” We react to Hundreds of Beavers as its snowbound survival story turns into an increasingly elaborate run of visual gags. Exploding trees are an early highlight, and the more its hero experiments with tools and contraptions, the more we find ourselves comparing the film to a point-and-click adventure, Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong Country. Our commentary gets into cartoon timing, repeated jokes, mascot costumes, and the satisfaction of watching a character finally work something out. We follow the escalating action through the film’s final stretch before giving our verdict on its comedy and storytelling, including its resemblance to American tall tales such as Paul Bunyan and John Henry. Includes spoilers for the film and its ending.
