This is a steel pressure tank holding 40 gallons of hot water, at the full pressure of your water supply, with a gas fire burning underneath it. The last line of defence isn't the tank. It's one small brass valve, standing guard in case everything else fails, and a metal rod inside that's designed to rot. We open up one real gas water heater, sheet by sheet: how cold water comes in without ruining the hot; a gas control with no power cord, powered by its own pilot flame; the chimney that runs straight through the water; the magnesium rod that dies so the tank lives; what the rumbles, drips and rotten-egg smells mean; the temperature-and-pressure relief valve and why its rules are so strict; how hot your water should be; how heaters learned to resist igniting gasoline fumes; and the federal rule for water heaters made from May 6, 2029, which is still on the books, unchanged, as of October 23, 2026. It is not the end of gas tanks. REFERENCE HEATER Bradford White RG240T6N: 40-gallon nominal (38 gallons rated), natural gas, 40,000 BTU/h, atmospheric vent, Defender flammable-vapour protection, ICON gas control. Unless we say otherwise, every number is for this heater, and its source is shown on screen, bottom left. Burner figures are sea-level ratings: this model is built for sea level to 2,000 feet unless its rating plate says otherwise. Internal sizes (flue, baffle, anode length, relief-valve probe) are not published, so the cutaway says "representative" on screen. SAFETY Rotten-egg smell in the AIR around the heater (not just in your hot water): treat it as a gas leak. Don't touch the heater, leave, and call your gas utility from outside. Never cap, plug or thread the relief-valve discharge pipe. Never put a shutoff between that valve and the tank. Never reset the thermal switch without someone finding out why it tripped, and never bypass any safety device. A dripping relief pipe is a call for a plumber. A lot of very hot water from that pipe means call a qualified technician now. Scalds: the CPSC urges setting water heaters to 120 °F, about where this heater's HOT mark sits. At 150 °F, most adults get a third-degree burn in 2 seconds. Keep gasoline, solvents and anything flammable well away from the heater, and have a carbon-monoxide alarm. Gas, relief-valve, electrical and thermal-switch work is for a licensed plumber or gas technician. This video explains how a water heater works; it is not a repair guide. Follow your owner's manual.
