"I Thought Every Home Was Like That" A Song About Childhood Trauma and Emotional Abuse. Some childhoods don't look abusive from the outside. There are clean clothes, Sunday church services, family meals and parents who insist they're doing everything out of love. But behind closed doors, there can be fear, silence, punishment and rules that nobody is allowed to question. As children, we don't have anything to compare our lives with. We believe what we're told. We learn that obedience means respect, that questioning is wrong, and that being frightened of our parents is simply part of growing up. Sometimes it takes decades to realise that what we experienced wasn't normal. "I Thought Every Home Was Like That" tells the story of a child raised in a strict religious household, where love and fear became impossible to separate. It's about growing up, defending the people who hurt you, and eventually recognising that the childhood you spent your life justifying was one you should never have had to endure. The broken glass in this song represents something that stays with us long after childhood has ended. The instinct to apologise. The expectation of anger. The fear of making a mistake, even when nobody else is there. And perhaps the most heartbreaking realisation of all is that the people we were supposed to turn to for comfort were sometimes the very people we feared.
