A powerful nor’easter has battered the East Coast from North Carolina to New England, bringing coastal flooding, damaging winds, beach erosion and power outages while the storm stalled offshore. Low-lying communities across New Jersey and New York were hit repeatedly as high tides pushed water back into streets. New York City reported more than 1,000 downed-tree reports, while one falling tree in Brooklyn killed a 56-year-old man and another branch injured four people. Along the Jersey Shore, flooding reached homes and roads, while Ocean City recorded a high tide of 7.63 feet, putting it alongside the flooding seen during the January 2016 storm Jonas. Farther south, ocean overwash damaged about 500 feet of Highway 12 on North Carolina’s Pea Island, cutting the usual road connection to Hatteras Island.
