In this episode, I sit down with Jeff Kibble, our local Member of Parliament and Canada’s Shadow Minister for Defence Procurement, for a wide-ranging conversation about public service, community, and some of the experiences that have shaped his perspective. Jeff discusses his role in Parliament at a time when global conflict and national defence are increasingly important issues, and what Canada needs to consider as it makes major decisions about defence procurement and preparedness. The conversation also becomes deeply personal. Jeff shares the devastating impact of his daughter losing her boyfriend after he was killed in a random stabbing in downtown Victoria, and how experiencing violent crime so close to his own family has influenced the way he thinks about public safety and politics. We also talk about fishing, its importance to Vancouver Island communities and why Jeff is fighting to protect it, along with a range of issues affecting Langford, the Highlands and the surrounding region. It’s a conversation about leadership, loss, public safety, national defence, fishing, and what it means to represent your community when the issues you deal with politically can also become deeply personal.
