Pulu Kisi is a vibrant traditional masked dance performed during Kathmandu's annual Indra Jatra festival, representing Airavata, the celestial white elephant and mount of Lord Indra. According to Newari mythology, when Indra was captured and bound in Kathmandu for stealing sacred flowers, his loyal elephant frantically roamed the city streets to find him. Reenacting this mythical search, young men from the Maharjan community of Kilagal carry a heavy woven bamboo-and-cloth elephant structure through the narrow alleyways, wildly dashing, twisting, and playfully charging into crowds to the upbeat rhythm of traditional drums. #newariculture #nepaliculture #nirmalmitragurung
