What happens when Mormon apologists mistake criticizing everyone else's beliefs for defending or supporting their own? In this episode of Let's Disagree, I'm joined by Nemo the Mormon to discuss a recent Cougar Chronicle article praising Jacob Hansen and Hayden Carroll for revolutionizing Latter-day Saint apologetics. We largely agree with the author that Jacob and Hayden have largely reshaped online Mormon apologetics in their image--and why this is a bad thing. Is this new approach actually making a stronger case for Mormonism? Or is it replacing meaningful engagement with evidence with a competition over whose worldview is less defensible? Using examples from Jacob and Hayden's own content, Nemo and I explore the growing influence of offensive and presuppositional apologetics within the online Mormon space—and the problems that arise when winning a debate becomes more important than establishing what's true. We discuss: Why Hayden Carroll conceded that Joseph Smith was a false prophet during a debate. The difference between attacking another person's worldview and defending your own. Whether the Book of Mormon's alleged archaeological successes actually resolve its historical problems. The logical fallacies behind "Where will you go?" arguments. Why spiritual experiences may be less reliable indicators of truth than believers assume. How tribalism, online engagement, and the pursuit of influence are shaping modern Mormon apologetics. While we're critical of many of these arguments and methods, the goal isn't to question anyone's sincerity or discourage people from believing. It's to ask whether Jacob and Hayden's methods of attacking competing worldviews actually helps in discovering truth. A special thanks to Nemo for joining me and sharing his perspective.
