At eleven years old, Bankei was haunted by a question no teacher could answer: What is our true nature? That question would follow him for fourteen years. He would leave home, study Confucianism and Buddhism, become a Zen monk, walk across Japan, sleep under bridges, practice meditation to the point of destroying his own body, and eventually become so sick that a doctor believed he was dying. Then, at the very edge of death, something happened. Bankei suddenly realized what he called the Unborn — a way of seeing the mind and life that would later become one of the most radical teachings in Japanese Zen. In this video, we follow the early life of Bankei Yōtaku and the extraordinary spiritual journey that led to his awakening. More than a historical story, this is a story about suffering, seeking, meditation, enlightenment, and the possibility that what we spend our entire lives searching for may already be present. This is the beginning of Bankei’s journey into Zen Buddhism, the Unborn, and the nature of awareness. #Bankei #Zen #ZenBuddhism
