Nobody alive is driving your train. It's doing sixty, at night. Every forty seconds or so, the train asks its driver if he's still awake. If nobody answers, it stops itself. Somebody keeps answering. For thirty days, the train can't stop. A dispatcher you never meet keeps every signal green. She tells you to blow the horn at every crossing. She doesn't tell you why. This is a fictional survival story. A few details in it are real: Locomotives have an alerter: if the driver stops responding, the train puts its own brakes on. Trains must sound the horn before public road crossings: two long, one short, one long, 15 to 20 seconds before (US federal rules). A train at speed can need a mile or more to stop (Operation Lifesaver). Train air brakes are fail-safe: if the air hoses between cars come apart, every brake on the train comes on. Passenger cars must have at least four emergency windows that come out without tools.
