Why do so many people still prefer a 1930s semi-detached house to a modern new build? Britain's interwar building boom produced millions of homes with a remarkably recognisable formula: front and rear gardens, bay windows, separate reception rooms, side access and layouts that could change as families changed. In this video, we explore how transport, building societies and mass housebuilding created the 1930s suburb, why the semi-detached house became so successful, and which parts of its design still work nearly a century later. We also look beyond the nostalgia at ageing roofs, insulation, wiring and the huge differences between individual interwar homes.
