☘️🇵🇸 *FROM ERIN'S SHORES TO PALESTINE* 🇵🇸☘️
An original Irish rebel-style ballad inspired by a remarkable and often overlooked connection between the histories of Ireland and Palestine.
During Ireland's War of Independence, the Black and Tans and Auxiliary forces became associated with British counter-insurgency in Ireland. After the conflict, the British Gendarmerie was established in Palestine, and former members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and Auxiliary forces were recruited into its ranks.
On *30 April 1922, around 760 men arrived at Haifa* to serve in the British Gendarmerie in Palestine.
So the story did not simply end when the guns fell silent in Ireland.
Men who had served the British authorities in Ireland found themselves crossing the sea and serving the British Mandate in Palestine.
This ballad follows that historical thread — from Ireland's struggle for independence to Palestine — and reflects on the ways in which the history of empire, resistance, displacement and the longing for freedom can cross borders and generations.
It is not a claim that Ireland and Palestine experienced identical histories. Their histories are their own.
It is a song about remembering a connection.
the roads that empires built.
About the people who walked those roads.
And about the songs that survived them.
**From Erin's shores to Palestine,
Across the sea, across the years...**
