In this clip from Episode 15 of the Freedom Charter Podcast, Ka’lee Mathews talks with Jessica Nowlan about creating Black Girls in Charge.
Ka’lee shares why mental health is so important to her and explains that care is about more than resources. It is about having people who actually show up, care about you, and stay with you every day — not just when it is convenient.
After losing her grandmother and realizing how much stress she had normalized, Ka’lee began thinking differently about what it means to lead, heal, and rest. Through Black Girls in Charge, she created a space for young girls to practice advocacy, self-care, and community healing together.
This clip is about mental health, grief, self-care, sisterhood, and learning that you cannot show up for others without also showing up for yourself.
