Reparations and the whole truth. “Let the First Apology Come from Africa” is a reflective roots reggae blues song exploring responsibility throughout the history of enslavement, from capture and sale in Africa to transportation across the Atlantic and exploitation on plantations. The song presents the perspective that acknowledgment and apology should begin with recognition of the African rulers, merchants and raiders who enslaved and sold other Africans. It also addresses the responsibility of European traders, shipowners, slaveholders, monarchies and institutions that sustained the system. This perspective does not excuse any participant or make one apology dependent on another. It invites discussion about complete historical accountability. The song does not assign collective guilt to Africans, Europeans or their descendants. Many African ancestors were victims of enslavement. Others resisted the trade and protected their communities. The video combines historical illustrations, modern photographs of African heritage sites and AI-generated cover artwork. Captions distinguish locations and periods. Some illustrations depict the East African slave trade and should not be understood as scenes of Caribbean-bound transportation. Remember the victims. Honour those who resisted. Tell the whole truth.
