STAMFORD BRIDGE REMEMBERS
Harald sailed from Norway
With England in his sight
He came with Tostig at his side
To claim the crown by right
They struck at northern England
At Fulford's bloody field
The English army broke beneath
The Viking axe and shield
Then Harold heard the news
And gathered all his men
He marched them north for York
To face the Vikings once again
They crossed the land for days
With every mile they ran
Then Stamford Bridge appeared
And there stood Harald's clan
The Vikings stood unarmored
Beneath the summer sun
They never thought the English king
Would reach them quite so fast
The shield walls crashed together
The spears began to fly
The axes split the helmets
And ravens filled the sky
Hardrada raised his banner
The raven flew ahead
The Norwegian king was struck
And Stamford Bridge turned red
An arrow found his throat
He fell beneath the blade
The warrior king was dead
But still the Vikings stayed
Then Tostig took command
And fought beside his men
The English offered mercy
But Tostig answered, "When?"
The battle raged for hours
The bridge became the grave
The Vikings formed their shield wall
And fought like men possessed
But reinforcements arrived
And broke the northern line
The exhausted Viking army
Could not survive the fight
Tostig fell among the dead
The Viking ranks were torn
The army that had sailed from Norway
Would never see its shores
Three hundred ships had sailed
Across the northern sea
Only a fraction made the journey home
From England's battlefield
And Harold stood victorious
But victory came too late
For William crossed the Channel
While England changed its fate
The king marched south again
With no time to rest or heal
From Stamford Bridge to Hastings
He faced another field of steel
Two battles in one season
Two armies, one crown
The Vikings fell in Yorkshire
And the Normans brought them down
Stamford Bridge remembers
The price the north had paid
The last great Viking invasion
Ended beneath the blade
STAMFORD BRIDGE REMEMBERS — ECHOES OF AGES
A crushing industrial doom metal journey into one of the most legendary battles of 1066.
On September 25, 1066, King Harold Godwinson and the English army confronted the invading Norwegian forces of Harald Hardrada and Tostig Godwinson at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire. After the Viking victory at Fulford and a rapid English march north, the two armies collided in a battle that would become one of the defining moments of the Viking Age.
This song follows the story from Harald Hardrada's invasion of England, through the clash of shield walls and the death of the Norwegian king, to Tostig's final stand and the destruction of the Viking invasion force.
Musically, the track combines crushing downtuned doom metal and industrial guitar riffs with an ancient Viking battlefield atmosphere — massive low-end guitars, distorted bass, war drums and dark Nordic instrumentation.
The battle at Stamford Bridge marked the end of Harald Hardrada's invasion and is often regarded as one of the final major Viking invasions of England. Yet Harold Godwinson's victory came at a terrible cost. His army had to march south almost immediately to face William of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings.
Two battles.
One crown.
The end of an age.
