In this video, I diagnose code P0420 — Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 — on my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta and show the simple $20 fix that worked for me.
After scanning the car, I confirmed the P0420 catalyst efficiency fault and installed an O2 sensor spacer on the downstream oxygen sensor. I then cleared the Check Engine Light and drove the car for more than 500 km to see if the P0420 code would return.
In this video you’ll see:
• How I diagnosed the P0420 code
• What the P0420 catalyst efficiency fault means
• How to remove the downstream O2 sensor
• How I installed the O2 sensor spacer
• How to clear the fault code
• The result after 500+ km of driving
This is my personal experience with this specific vehicle. A P0420 code can be caused by different issues, including a failing catalytic converter, oxygen sensor problems, exhaust leaks, or other faults, so proper diagnosis is important before replacing parts.
If you’re dealing with a P0420 Check Engine Light, I hope my experience helps you understand the problem and decide what to check next.
