In 1989, two scientists claimed they’d created nuclear fusion in a jar, and the world believed it, until nobody could repeat it. Since then, every fusion claim has faced a wall of skepticism.
On October 8, 2026, a company from British Columbia announced that its fusion machine had heated plasma to more than 12 million degrees Celsius. It didn’t use giant magnets or lasers. It used something much simpler: squeezing. The result was measured with help from the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
In this video, Walter Briggs tells the story of General Fusion and its founder, Michel Laberge, a physicist who left a printing technology company to chase a “star on Earth.” Walter explains how fusion works, why it’s so hard, how tokamaks and lasers try to tame it, and why squeezing plasma like a bicycle pump squeezes air could be a cheaper path. He also covers what’s still unproven, including peer review, the 100-million-degree goal and a 2035 power plant target.
