Located in Ezhou within China's Hubei province stands an extraordinary structure: a 26-floor vertical pig farm constructed by Hubei Zhongxin Kaiwei Modern Farming. Two identical towers operate side by side, creating what's considered the world's largest pig-farming facility. Known locally as the Bajie Buildings—referencing Zhu Bajie from Journey to the West—these towers required approximately 4 billion yuan (around $560-570 million USD) to construct. Combined, they provide 800,000 square meters of space and accommodate roughly 650,000 pigs simultaneously. Annual production reaches an impressive 1.2 million pigs, generating about 54,000 tonnes of pork per tower. Massive freight elevators—six in each tower, each transporting approximately 240 pigs—continuously shuttle animals between floors, transforming what resembles residential high-rises into functioning vertical agricultural operations.
