Walking Southern Vancouver Island - Fort Rodd Hill - Canadian National Historic Site - Lower Battery. Built at the same time as Upper Battery, and identical in function, this position features two U-shaped concrete gun emplacements that originally housed 6-inch "disappearing" guns. These massive weapons were designed to rise above the concrete parapet to fire and then mechanically drop back down behind the shield of the fort to safely reload. Today, the Lower Battery represents World War One onward. Notable differences from Upper Battery include the Casemate Barracks and Fortress Plotting Room. (Government of Canada Historic Sites website)
