The Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M1), Islamabad-Dera Ismail Khan Motorway (M14) and GT Road were ordered closed indefinitely from September 23, with authorities citing preparations to stop protesters from reaching the federal capital. Security has also been intensified in Attock, with thousands of personnel deployed and containers placed at key crossings. Punjab has separately imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5 and requested Pakistan Rangers for security assistance in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali. The notification cited intelligence alerts and threats to public peace and safety. A major development has also emerged under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. Lieutenant General (retired) Nauman Mahmood has been appointed the first Secretary General of the agreement’s Secretariat, which is being established in Riyadh. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye had previously agreed to institutionalise their defence cooperation under the Makkah Agreement. On the international front, Donald Trump has said that talks between the United States and Iran are continuing and that he believes a settlement can eventually be reached. The US administration has also approved visas for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials to attend the UN General Assembly.
